The first vineyard was planted in 1975 in the municipality of Villamediana de Iregua (near Logroño).
The winery itself was founded in 1991 by Dionisio Ruiz Ijalba.
The primary business of Dionisio, a well-known businessman in La Rioja, was the extraction and commercialisation of gravel and stone.
As a consequence of the open cast mining, limestone rich but poor terrain was left behind.
This terrain was not very suitable for agricultural purposes but after analysis it became clear that the basic soil compesition is very similar to terrain that was used throughout history for the cultivation of high quality, low yielding vines.
Since 1975 Dionisio has been transforming these quarries in to vineyards with a limestone base and a layer of about 50 cm topsoil.
This way he was able to contribute to the restoration of the environment and the Riojan landscape.
All our vineyards are planted in this manner.
The winery is still family owned and helmed by the second generation.
