Mainly Arbequina, some Empeltre and other traditional varieties in classical plantations (Redondilla, Machona).
High quality oil; on one hand the variety has the disadvantage of very small fruits and harvesting is not very easy, on the other hand, the shrubby, broomlike growth of the branches allows for a dense plantation.
This olive has to be grafted, because it has trouble rooting. Its production is constant and the trees yield lots of olives once the tree feels at ease. Its oil is of high quality. Production is constant the olives are ripe early and are easy to harvest. It is quite a rustic variety and the trees are planted on poor, dry soils. It handles the cold winters well.
These olives give a lot of quality oil.
Minority variety of La Rioja, resistant to cold winters and provides a very good oil.
Interesting variety to blend with Arbequina.
This is a very rustic and completely different variety.
The olive producties varies every year. Some years it produces massive amounts and other years next to none. Its oil is organoleptically very attractive and high in oleic acids.
Traditional plantations with frames 7 x 3.5 m.
We have about 3 ha.
New high-density plantations 4 x 1.5 m. Currently 12 ha.
Hand operated broomstick vibration machines are used for the old olive groves and machine harvesting for new high density plantations.
Making Oil from olives:
The olives are processed immediately after harvesting in a mill with modern techniques and with the maximum guarantee of hygiene. All used materials are stainless steel.
After thorough cleaning and a series of physical processes (grinding, mixing, pressing and centrifugation in two phases) to extract the juice of the olive are performed at low temperatures.
Unfiltered oil, healthy and aromatically potent.
After a time where the olive groves in La Rioja were steadily declining the agricultural practice has been revived in recent years to nearly three thousand hectares.
Unfortunately, Old groves (200 and 500 years old!) are still being removed.
Viña Ijalba wants to contribute to maintain old olive groves. By planting new varieties adapted to areas of Rioja like Santo Domingo de la Calzada, where olive growing is frankly very difficult, yet it gives an excpetional oil.
The oil is available in green Uv protected glass bottles of 250 ML, 500 ML, aluminum cans of 1L and pet bottles of 2L.
