A very important part of our philosophy is respect for the environment during the entire process. Dionisio Ruiz Ijalba, owner of the winery, planted his first vineyard in 1975 near Logroño. Viña Ijalba currently has more than 90 hectares of vineyards spread over several terrains around Logroño, San Vicente de la Sonsierra and the Najerilla Valley.
Virtually all the vineyards are planted on obsolete opencast mines (quarries) that have been fully recovered. The desert of stones, where hardly anything grows, is transformed into vineyard with a bottomlayer of large calcium rich stones a middle layer (50 to 60 cm) of ground that was set aside on the terrain and recoverd from the clearing of roads and paths. The top layer (50 cm) consists of ground, vegetation and menure at the moment of planting the vines.
The recovery of these poor soils with organic vineyards planted on top has but one goal. To make great wines.
